FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Enterprise architecture maps how your organisation’s strategy, processes, information and technology fit together, so a decision in one area does not break another. Think of it as the city plan for your technology estate: it does not construct the buildings, but it stops you putting a factory in a residential street. Its output is better decisions, not more diagrams.

Because transformation changes many systems and processes at once, and without an architectural view those changes collide: duplicated systems, broken integrations and data that no longer matches. Enterprise architecture gives the programme a target state and a sequence to reach it. That is the difference between a roadmap and a wish list.

TOGAF is the most widely used enterprise architecture framework, a structured method for designing and governing architecture from business goals down to technology. It matters because it gives you a common language and a repeatable process rather than one consultant’s personal method. PTP Integrated (PTPI) works within recognised architecture frameworks including TOGAF.

Before a major change, not after: ahead of an ERP replacement, a cloud migration, a merger or any programme that touches multiple systems. Retrofitting architecture once systems are bought is far more expensive than setting the target early. Smaller organisations do not need a large EA function; they need enough architecture to make the next big decision safely.

Enterprise architecture looks across the whole organisation over a multi-year horizon; solution architecture designs one system or project within that bigger picture. You need both: EA sets the rules of the road, and solution architects design each journey within them. Problems start when projects are designed as if the bigger picture does not exist.
